REGISTERED & ACCREDITED
Check our F-Gas certification before you book.
By law, engineers who handle refrigerant in air conditioning and heat pumps need F-Gas qualifications, and the business they work for needs an F-Gas company certificate. Comfort Services Engineers Limited holds that certificate through REFCOM, covering the installation, commissioning, servicing, repair and decommissioning of stationary air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump systems.
Our F-Gas Stationary Equipment Company Certificate is issued under the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations 2015 and applies to systems with refrigerant charges both below and above 3kg.
Our certificate comes from Refcom Certification Ltd. To confirm it is current, look us up on the public REFCOM register for company number REF1019926.
Comfort Services Engineers Limited is a London-registered company based at Suite G04, 1 Quality Court, Chancery Lane, a short trip from Angel and Clerkenwell.
AIR CONDITIONING ISLINGTON
Cooling that suits Islington's streets and buildings.
Most air conditioning work in Islington happens in people’s homes: Georgian and Victorian terraces, garden squares, flats carved out of period houses, mansion blocks, ex-council estates and the newer apartment buildings around Angel, King’s Cross and Archway. Each one raises its own questions about where pipework can run, how much room there is outside and who has to agree before anything is fixed to the building.
We plan installations around those questions from the first visit. That means looking at the back of the property as well as the room you want to cool, finding out early whether the street is likely to be in a conservation area, and thinking about the neighbours on the other side of a shared wall or garden fence. The aim is a quiet, tidy system that fits the house rather than one that fights it.
Homes & flats
Bedrooms, living rooms, loft rooms, rear kitchen extensions and home offices in houses, maisonettes and flats, from a single room to a whole-home multi-split system.
Local businesses
Restaurants, bars and shops on Upper Street and around Angel, plus studios, creative workspaces and small office floors in Clerkenwell and Finsbury.
SERVICES ACROSS ISLINGTON
Installation, repairs and upkeep for Islington properties.
We cover N1, N5, N7, N19, EC1V and EC1R. Detailed information on system types, common faults and what a service visit involves is on our main air conditioning page.
Home air conditioning installation
Wall-mounted, multi-split and ducted systems for houses and flats, sized room by room and positioned to keep outdoor equipment off the street frontage wherever possible.
Loft & extension cooling
Cooling for top-floor loft rooms and glazed rear extensions, which tend to overheat first in summer, with outdoor units often placed on the extension’s flat roof or the rear wall.
Breakdowns & fault finding
Visits for systems that have stopped cooling, are dripping water, showing an error code, switching on and off or making unusual noises.
Annual servicing
Cleaning, filter and coil checks, drainage tests and performance readings for home systems, landlord-owned units and small commercial sites.
MVHR filters & rebalancing
Filter replacement, fan and airflow checks and rebalancing for flats and houses with mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.
Shop, restaurant & studio cooling
Systems for dining rooms, bars, retail units and studios, planned so noisy work and changeovers happen around your opening hours.
SYSTEM TYPES
Which kind of system suits an Islington property?
Most homes and small premises in Islington are best served by one of the options below. The choice usually comes down to how many rooms need cooling, how the building is laid out inside and how many outdoor positions are realistic.
Single split units
One indoor unit paired with one outdoor unit. A straightforward option for a bedroom, a home office or one room in a converted flat.
Multi-split for several rooms
Several indoor units, typically up to five, connected to one outdoor unit. Helpful in terraces and flats where only one condenser position is acceptable.
Ceiling cassettes
Flush-mounted units with four-way airflow, more common in shops, studios, cafés and workspaces than in homes.
Concealed ducted units
Indoor units tucked into a ceiling void or loft space, feeding discreet grilles. Often worth considering during a renovation or loft conversion while ceilings are open.
VRF / VRV for larger premises
Shared-plant systems for bigger commercial spaces and some residential blocks, giving individual control over many indoor units across several floors.
Need advice first?
If you are unsure, a free survey looks at the rooms, the rear elevation, roof and access, and any consent likely to be needed, then sets out the options that fit.

BEFORE WORK STARTS
Things to check for an Islington installation.
Few of these rule air conditioning out, but each one can change where equipment goes and how long the project takes to arrange. We raise them at the survey so there are no surprises later.
Conservation areas and the council
Islington Council is the planning authority, and many streets in the borough sit inside conservation areas. Outdoor units on a front elevation, or anywhere visible from the street, can need planning permission and are often a problem, so check with Islington Council for your address before anything is fixed.
Listed houses
Some Georgian and early Victorian houses are listed, and protection can cover interiors as well as the outside. Fixing equipment or making new openings can need listed building consent, so plans should be confirmed with the council first.
Freeholder and leaseholder consent
In a flat, the outside walls, roof and shared areas usually belong to the freeholder. Your lease may require their written consent, and sometimes a managing agent’s, before units or pipework go on the building.
Neighbours and noise
Terraces and back gardens in Islington sit close together. Outdoor units need positioning, mounting and model choices that keep noise and vibration away from neighbouring bedroom windows and party walls.
Where the outdoor unit can go
Typical options are the rear elevation, the flat roof of a back extension, a lightwell or basement area, or a balcony where the lease allows. Where none of those works, a system without a separate outdoor unit can sometimes be considered.
Parking and access
Many residential streets are permit-controlled, and some houses have narrow side access or none at all. We plan for parking, deliveries and getting equipment through the house or onto the roof safely.

ISLINGTON PROPERTY TYPES
Different homes, different solutions.
Housing in Islington runs from Georgian squares and Victorian terraces to post-war estates and glass-fronted apartment buildings. Here is how air conditioning usually fits each one.
Georgian & Victorian terraces
Front elevations are often off-limits, so outdoor units usually go at the back, with pipework routed inside or along the rear wall to leave the street view unchanged.
Flats in converted houses
Shared walls, a shared roof and a freeholder to consult. A multi-split system with a single outdoor unit can keep the impact on the building to a minimum.
Mansion blocks
Solid walls, communal areas and building rules set by the freeholder or managing agent. Lightwells and rear elevations are common positions, subject to approval.
Estate & ex-local-authority blocks
Leaseholders normally need landlord permission for anything fixed to the outside. Balconies and rear walls may be possible where the lease and landlord allow.
New-build apartments
Blocks around Angel, King’s Cross and Archway often have MVHR, sealed facades and strict rules on external equipment, so the options depend heavily on the building’s management.
Lofts, extensions & home offices
Rooms under the roof and glazed rear extensions heat up quickly. A flat extension roof can offer a discreet outdoor unit position out of sight of the street.

COMMERCIAL AIR CONDITIONING ISLINGTON
For restaurants, shops, studios and small offices.
Islington’s commercial premises are mostly smaller units: restaurants, bars and shops along Upper Street and around Angel, and studios, creative offices and compact office floors in Clerkenwell and Finsbury. We also work with surgeries, clinics and schools. Many of these sit beneath flats or next to homes, so equipment choice and noise control matter as much as cooling capacity.
Servicing contracts
Regular maintenance visits, with a written record of each system’s condition and clear advice on which repairs are urgent and which can wait.
Repairs when it matters
Call-outs for kitchens, dining rooms, shop floors and studios when a unit stops cooling, starts leaking or shows a fault code.
Larger systems and energy inspections
Premises with a larger air conditioning system may need periodic energy inspections under the building energy performance regulations, often known as TM44 inspections. We can advise whether this is likely to apply to your site.
MORE OF OUR WORK

MVHR ISLINGTON
MVHR for new-build flats and retrofitted homes.
Many newer apartment blocks in Islington, and homes that have been through a deep energy retrofit, use mechanical ventilation with heat recovery to bring in fresh air and remove stale air. When filters clog or the system drifts out of balance, residents notice stuffy rooms, condensation, noisy fans or draughts. We replace filters, check fans and controls, measure airflows and rebalance systems for residents, landlords and managing agents. More detail is on our MVHR services page.
Air conditioning in Islington: common questions
It can be needed. Outdoor units on elevations facing the street, or visible from public areas, can need planning permission in a conservation area, and some streets have extra controls. Rear positions are often easier, but the rules depend on the address, so check with Islington Council before equipment positions are fixed. We can help you gather the details they may ask for.
Often, yes, but leases commonly require the freeholder’s written consent before anything is fixed to external walls, roofs or shared areas. Check your lease first. We can supply equipment details, drawings and photos to support your request.
Usually on the rear wall, on the flat roof of a back extension, at ground level in the garden or in a lightwell. We avoid front elevations wherever we can and look for pipe routes that keep the outside of the house neat.
Modern outdoor units are designed to run quietly, but in close-packed terraces the position still matters. We consider distances to neighbouring windows, anti-vibration mounting and night-time running. If planning permission is needed, the council may also look at noise.
Sometimes. Listed building consent can be needed for external units and for internal work such as new openings or pipe routes through historic fabric. What is possible depends on the building, so discuss it with Islington Council early.
Yes. MVHR filters need changing regularly, and fans, controls and airflows benefit from periodic checks. If rooms feel stuffy or the unit is noisy, a service and rebalance is a good place to start.
Yes. We can inspect and service systems fitted by other installers. Let us know the make and model, or send a photo of the unit labels, so we arrive prepared.
We give a written quote after a free survey, because the price depends on the number of rooms, the system type and brand, the length and difficulty of pipe runs, where the outdoor unit can go, access and parking, any consents required and how much making good is needed.
